The 23rd graduation ceremony of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture was held at the Seminar Hall of the university in Yangon yesterday.

It was attended by State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Chair Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw of Thanlyin Min Kyaung Pahtamapyan Buddhism Learning, Centre Dr Bhaddanta Candima Bhivamsa, Rector of University, Dr Bhaddanta Hsekinda, Sayadaws, nuns, Union Minister for Religious Affairs and Culture U Tin Oo Lwin and his wife, Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein and departmental officials, local and foreign graduates and families.

At the ceremony, Sayadaw Dr Bhaddanta Candima Bhivamsa delivered “Saraniya Ovada Katha”, and Pro-rector Sayadaw Dr Bhaddanta Nadhiñana read out the Katha in English.

The Union minister and the chief minister presented degrees and insignias to 91 local and foreign trainee graduates.

The Union minister and his wife on behalf of the Rector Sayadaw presented the gold medal awarded by Rector Sayadaw to Vietnamese Nun Nguyen Anh Tuyet, who completed BA (Buddha Dhamma) , and the Pro-rector (admin) presented the honorary medals to the officials and ambassadors.

International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University was established on 9 December 1998, and monks, nuns, and lay persons from local and abroad are attending the Buddhism and Dhamma courses.

The university has turned out a total of 2,686 PhD, MA and BA degree and diploma holders to date, and in the 2025-2026 academic year, 408 trainees from local and abroad are attending the courses.
