Union Minister for International Cooperation U Kyaw Tin participated in the High-level Video Conference on Poverty Eradication and South-South Cooperation at 7:30 pm on 26 September 2020 from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nay Pyi Taw.
The video conference was held under the theme of “Towards a Shared Future for Developing Countries: Promoting Poverty Eradication and Sustainable Development through Deepened South-South Cooperation”. It was chaired by Mr Wang Yi, State Councilor and Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China and attended by Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Ministers and other Ministers concerned from 13 developing countries, and UN Deputy Secretary-General Ms. Amina Mohammed, Under-Secretary-General Mr Liu Zhenmin and UNDP Administrator Mr Achim Steiner from the United Nations.
During the meeting, the Ministers acknowledged the importance of strengthening solidarity and deepening South-South cooperation in the fight against COVID-19 as well as in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the sustainable development goals.
The participants also agreed that the United Nations plays an important role in assisting developing countries with resources and technical support. At the same time, they called upon international community to continue support to developing countries through assistance and cooperation to reduce poverty which is exacerbated due to COVID-19, and promote economic growth.
In his statement, Union Minister U Kyaw Tin highlighted the need to reinforce cooperation among the Southern countries in combating the challenges of current health crisis and poverty in all its manifestations. The Union Minister also shared Myanmar’s efforts in fighting COVID-19 under the constraint of limited resources. He welcomed China’s decision to distribute vaccine as the global public goods when available and sought China’s support to facilitate Myanmar’s request for getting earlier and affordable access to COVID-19 vaccine.
The Union Minister apprised the meeting of Myanmar’s endeavours in alleviating poverty by implementing comprehensive development strategies, including the Myanmar Sustainable Development Plan (MSDP) to accelerate economic growth and rural development, and underscored the need for enhanced global partnership to counter severe impacts of COVID-19 and to successfully implement the SDGs.
He also suggested exchanging information, strengthening capacity of health-related professionals, and developing joint health research and enhancing coordination to strengthen intra-regional trade and regional value chains in times of pandemic outbreak, among the countries of the South, and stressed the importance of BRI in creating job opportunities, reducing poverty and meeting social and environmental needs of participating countries for the full recovery from global economic downturn in the post Covid-19 era.
The Union Minister also urged continued cooperation between Myanmar and China in both border and normal trade in order to ensure smooth transaction of supply chain, not affected by COVID-19 control measures.
The High-Level Video Conference on Poverty Eradication and South-South Cooperation was held to promote the important role of South-South cooperation in commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations.
At the conclusion of the Conference, a Chair’s Press Release was issued. Also present at the Conference were the Permanent Secretary and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
