U Kyaw Tin, Union Minister for International Cooperation of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar held discussions with Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia via videoconference at 9:00 am on 18 September 2020 from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nay Pyi Taw. During the videoconference, the Ministers cordially exchanged views on ways to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between Myanmar and Malaysia, including possibility of reviving the mechanism of the Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation at a mutually convenient time. To that end, both sides discussed on possible cooperation in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, mitigating its economic impacts, provision of medical supplies such as PPEs, ventilators and other basic medical equipment by Malaysia to assist in Myanmar government’s efforts in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, facilitation of repatriation of Myanmar nationals stranded in Malaysia including undocumented Myanmar nationals, possibility of exporting rice and other foodstuffs from Myanmar to Malaysia and middle east markets to contribute to Myanmar’s efforts for economic recovery in the post COVID-19 period.
The two Ministers also candidly and cordially exchanged views on matters pertaining to regional cooperation in combatting human trafficking to stop the flow of boat people and finding sustainable solution of displaced persons in Rakhine State in accordance with bilateral agreements between Myanmar and Bangladesh. They also stressed the importance of understanding each other’s challenges and concerns to strengthen bilateral relations and to resolve such issues in ASEAN way in the spirit of ASEAN unity. Union Minister U Kyaw Tin thanked Malaysian Foreign Minister for his gesture of revitalizing the bilateral relations, and for Malaysia’s active role and support to bring in Myanmar to ASEAN in 1997.
Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein had served in various capacities including Minister of Defence, Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Education before assuming the current capacity as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia on 9 March 2020.—MNA
